Ethnographic open-air museum „Etar“ is one of a kind in Bulgaria. It was founded on the 7th of September 1964. The museum is situated 8 km South of Gabrovo.
AEC „Etar“ owns the only one and unique collection of the old-times water-driven machinery in Bulgaria .
It is consisted of 10 objects and it is one of the most riche and well-kept active technical collection around the European museums on the open air. This is the reason why the water wheel is the emblem to the Etar.The most important specialty of the collection is that all objects are in action as it was in the past. The craftsman trade street offers 16 models to the Balkan architecture, showing the original talent to Revival builders.
Since the 5th of August 2013 the young visitors of the Ethnographic open-air museum „Etar“ have their own favorite territory there. It is the Children’s corner. There children are trained in different crafts and to acquire new skills by means of intelligible and attractive presentation of the information, they are also acquainted with the folklore traditions.
The corner is designed for children aged 4 to 12 and its capacity is 15 children. It is required children to be attended by a parent or a teacher.
During the summer season (from 01 May till 30 September) it can be visited from 9.00a.m. to 7.00p.m.
During winter months it has the following working time: from 9.00a.m. to 4:30p.m.
We offer you guided tours through the complex in English, German, French, Bulgarian and Russian.
