Gradishte Nature Trail

The trail is located just 3 km northeast of Gabrovo and is easily accessible. The route is a loop with a gentle ascent and passes through a cool mixed forest, reaching the fortified settlement at its highest point. There is a viewing platform offering a panoramic view of much of the Balkan Mountains, the Yantra River valley, and the city of Gabrovo. On a clear day, you can see the sheer cliffs of the Vitata Wall and Botev Peak.

Archaeologists have dated the “Gradishte” fortress to the Late Antique and Early Medieval periods (4th–6th centuries). The people of Gabrovo call the fortress “The Guardian of the Pass,” as it was built during the Roman Empire to guard the main road through the Shipka Pass and to halt barbarian invasions. It is a fortified settlement typical of its time. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a fortress wall approximately 4 km long, a dense cluster of residential buildings, quarters for the garrison guarding the fortress, a main entrance, and three watchtowers. At the highest point of the fortress stands the main temple with a baptismal chamber, known as the baptistery. The everyday objects discovered during the archaeological excavations—old coins, jewelry, beautiful ornaments, tableware, and more—are housed in the Regional History Museum in Gabrovo.
