From the “Partizanska Pesen” Hut to the “Mazalat” Hut
The route begins at the main road near the “Partizanska Pesen”” in the Uzana area and, after just a few minutes, enters a cool beech forest. The trail follows a wide forest path, with several forks in the first kilometer. For this reason, it is recommended that you follow the trail markers carefully or use a GPS track.
After a short stretch outside the forest, the only significant ascent on the route begins. Over the course of about 3 kilometers, you’ll gain approximately 250 meters in elevation, and it takes a little over an hour of leisurely walking to reach the highest point. Along the way, you’ll reach the area around Korita Peak (1,492 m), which offers pleasant views of the surrounding Stara Planina slopes.
Shortly before the summit, there is a fork in the trail—the left path descends toward the village of Skobelevo, while the right path continues toward the “Mazalat” mountain hut. The route follows the right fork, which circles Mount Korita on its northern side and re-enters the forest.
From here on, the trail runs along the Stara Planina ridge. In some places, it runs close to the ridge itself, while in others it cuts across the peaks, providing an easy and pleasant hike through centuries-old forests. Next, the trail goes around Mount Buhala (1,528 m), after which the route continues through a shaded forest section for about 40–50 minutes.
You’ll emerge from the forest onto the road connecting the village of Lagut with the “Mazalat” mountain hut. This is also where the eastern entrance to the Central Balkan National Park is located, offering impressive panoramic views of the majestic Triglav massif.
It takes about 20 minutes to reach the final destination. The hike can continue either along the road or along the ridge trail, which offers even more beautiful panoramic views. Shortly thereafter, you’ll reach the “Mazalat” hut—one of the most popular and picturesque huts in the Central Stara Planina Mountains.
